Shankland Scores Again As United Come From Behind To Beat The Jags

Last night, Dundee United produced a fantastic second-half performance to maintain their 100% win record as Robbie Neilson’s men came from behind to beat Partick Thistle.

The Jags took the lead midway through the first-half through as Steven Saunders headed home Cammy Palmers cross, but Laurence Shankland scored his fifth goal of the season with a mishit volley before substitute Peter Pawlett scrambled home the winner on the 73rd minute, following some poor goalkeeping from Jamie Sneddon to send the 1,080 travelling fans home delighted.

The result comes after what has been a difficult week for Partick Thistle, as Colin Weir withdrew his financial support from the club as well as The Jags deciding to cancel the team busses to away games to cut down costs.

Friday night football was back as the game got underway in the Maryhill sunshine.

It was a fast start to the game with both sides going at it early. United nearly took the lead after just two minutes on the clock when Sam Stanton burst down the line before his shot was saved by the legs of Sneddon.

The next chance came for the hosts when Joe Cardle led the Thistle attack then playing it out wide to Kenny Miller, who ran into the box before his dangerous cross was put out for a corner. From the resulting corner It was Robson who rose highest, but headed over.

The best chance of the game so far came on the 20th minute when Paul McMullan ran free on the counter-attack and opted to have a shot at goal instead of squaring it to Shankland, who would of had the easiest of finishes.

The opening goal came on the 23rd minute when a corner wasn’t dealt with properly by United. The ball was cleared as far as Palmer, who ran to the edge of the box and crossed towards the back-post where it was met by Steven Saunders and the 28-year-old nodded it home past Benjamin Siegrist.

Thistle nearly doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Alex Jones wriggled by a few United defenders before his snap-shot was spilled by Siegrist, but the rebound was cleared just in time as Tommy Robson was lurking.

Half Time- Partick Thistle 1-0 Dundee United

Dundee United came out flying in the second-half and were constantly threatening The Jags goal. They deservedly pulled themselves level as Laurence Shankland’s mishit volley ended up beating Sneddon.

The Tangerines got their tails up following the equaliser and if anyone looked like winning it certainly was the visitors.

However, Thistle could have easily restored their lead after hardly getting out their own half, when a corner was met by Sean McGinty, who headed over being left unmarked.

The away side took the lead through substitute, Peter Pawlett, when he scored the easiest goal he will ever score. A cross-field pass was beautifully take down by Appere then slid it into Jamie Robson. He made his way into the box  before his shot rolled under Sneddon and was poked home on the line by Pawlett.

Gary Caldwell’s men pushed for a late equaliser, but The Arabs stood tall and held onto three vital points.
